Why Is My Car Overheating?

Overheating Car Engine

A number of issues can cause your car to overheat, ranging from a problem with your radiator to the cooling system. Your vehicle has a “normal” place for its temperature gauge, with most operating between 195 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit. If you notice that it’s higher than it should be, don’t drive your car and prevent more significant issues down the road.

Below are some of the reasons that a car would overheat. Feel free to call us if you have any questions.

What Does It Mean When Your Car Overheats?

Your car overheating is a sign of a more significant problem that needs to get addressed immediately. With that said, below are some of the most common reasons a car would overheat:

  • There’s a blockage in the coolant hose – Since dirt and debris can get in your cooling system from regular drives on Eagan roads, it can cause blockages in the coolant hose.
  • There’s a problem with your coolant – The wrong coolant or an improper coolant-to-water ratio (50/50 is proper) can cause the engine to overheat.
  • Your car’s water pump is broken – The water pump sends engine coolant throughout the cooling system. If there’s a leak or a shifted pump shaft, it can cause overheating.
  • There’s a leak in the cooling system – The radiator, hoses, water pump, head gasket, and thermostat housing are components of the cooling system, which can be susceptible to leaks.
  • There’s an issue with the radiator – If there’s a blockage, leak, or a problem with the radiator fan, which could cause a car to overheat.

My Car is Overheating: What Should I Do?

You may not experience overheating right away. If you notice an issue while driving on Woodbury roads, it’s okay. If the air is on, turn it off and run your heat at full blast. It may get uncomfortable, but it helps pull the heat from the engine until you can pull over to a safe area. Avoid popping the hood using your hands for at least 30 minutes.
